When we were asked to create a giant pair of sunglasses for the front lawn of the new VUE luxury apartments in Canmore we said 'Heck yah!'. The VUE Apartments are located at 120 Kananaskis Way, Canmore and have a perfect corner street view to the iconic Ha-Ling Peak and Ship's Prow. Our goal right from the outset was to create a fun public art piece that encouraged people to lay inside and get that perfect photo with the mountains framed in as well.
The frame shape is based on the old school Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Details include the little white ovals on the face and Ray-Ban's font for the word 'VUE' on the side.
The construction of the sunglasses is made from four x 1/2" thick steel plates welded into box form (front/back/top/bottom) so that the glasses had appropriate girth and 3D appeal. All the welds and edges were sanded down smooth for safety and then the entire statue was sandblasted and double powder coated. We chose hot red for the fun and energy it provides against the backdrop of the immense Bow Valley mountains.
